A Letter From Ken Eltschlager, WVU Rugby Alumnus
Dear WVU Rugby Football Club Alumni:
Over the past few years the WVU Men's RFC has made significant strides towards being highly competitive. Currently the Men's Club is in Division 1 of the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Conference (MARC) along with IUP and Pitt. For a short period, the club was playing in the USA Rugby East Conference at the D1A level with the likes of Penn State and Wheeling Jesuit. The club would like to return to that level in the future and can with your help.
The University still only provides limited support at the “club” level as it has since inception of the club. However, it has provided a great pitch for matches and practices, commensurate with playing at the highest level. As stated in the attached letter from Coach Tim McCarthy, the club needs funding for coaching and recruitment to achieve a higher, sustainable level of competition. The fact that this level was achieved without significant financial support is commendable and demonstrates the current staying power of the club. But the club now needs your financial help.
In years gone by the club has ask for donations to assist with travel and incidentals for competition at the D1A level and Big 12 tournament. Unfortunately, a mechanism for tracking donated funds and providing accountability were lacking. Through the hard work of prior coaches Richard Glover and Tim McCarthy, $5,000 has been raised to open an Endowment in the Division of Student Life entitled the “WVU Men’s Rugby Club Fund” at This is a qualified charitable organization with Federal ID 55-6017181. This is the first step towards meeting the financial needs of the club to become and stay competitive at the highest level of the sport.
Please consider a donation to the club that will help achieve the goal of $50,000 for coaching and scholarship needs.
Please forward this message to other Alumni to maximize our benefit to the club and thanks for your support of WVU Rugby!

A Letter From Former Head Coach Tim McCarthy
December 21, 2018
Hello WVU Rugby Alumni and Friends-
It is my pleasure to let you know that we have established the West Virginia Mens Rugby Club Fund at the WVU Foundation which will allow us to sustain and grow our beloved rugby club here at West Virginia University. The fund’s intent is to provide money for coaching and for partial scholarships for rugby student-athletes.
The players themselves, through their dues system of $250 for fall semester and $150 for spring semester, paid into a separate account, pay for the day-to-day operations of the club including travel expenses, equipment, conference dues and fees, referee fees, and game-day hosting. The Club Sports office within the West Virginia University Campus Recreation Department also helps with some of our operational expenses. This year we have been able to raise nearly $9,000.00 toward these expenses.
The purpose of the WV Men’s Rugby Club Fund is not for operational expenses but for the future growth of our rugby program. To move our program forward and compete at a conference and national level we need to add two important items: Paid coaching and player scholarships. As the visibility of rugby at the national and world level rises, colleges throughout the U.S. are realizing the value of their rugby programs to their schools. Many of these schools are paying full- and part-time coaches and providing scholarships to qualified student-athletes.
I’ve been with the team for four years as an assistant and now head coach. However, I retired as head coach at the end of this past fall season. We currently have $6,000.00 in the fund. Our fund-raising goal for this year is $50,000.00; $15,000.00 for a part-time coach and $35,000.00 for scholarships. Please help us attract an excellent coach and student-athletes by donating to this 501c3 fund (Account # 2W1313) at West Virginia University. Thank you and “Let’s Go Mountaineers!”.
